Leading Yourself First

Why is learning to lead yourself so important? Because God didn't call you to simply accept your life. He called you to lead your life.

Leading yourself means becoming intentional about how you think, respond, choose, and live. It means learning to align your perspective with the Lord's rather than allowing your circumstances, emotions, or other people's opinions to determine your direction.

Paul gives us a powerful reason for this in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20:

“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

In other words, my life isn't simply mine to do with whatever I want. It belongs to God. And that changes the way we think about self-leadership.

Leading yourself isn't about controlling everything around you. You can't. It's about taking responsibility for what God has entrusted to you—your thoughts, attitudes, decisions, time, gifts, reactions, and obedience.

As the old saying goes, we can't always choose what happens to us, but we can choose what we do with what happens to us. That's where leadership begins.

Before you can lead a team, an organization, a ministry, or even your family well, you have to be willing to lead yourself.

Ask yourself: Is the way I'm thinking about my life aligned with God's perspective? Am I intentionally stewarding what He has entrusted to me—or simply reacting to whatever comes my way?
