Eternal Springs
I remember when my mom was going to build a house on land that had no city water lines running to it and had to dig a well. I was amazed by the “high-tech” way in which she searched for where to dig. She got a “Y”-shaped limb and walked slowly around the vicinity in which she wanted the well. As she walked, when she was near water, the stick pulled toward the ground. I truly thought she was playing a joke on me. But a well was dug where her limb “marked” and there was plenty of water to supply the entire house. She could have dug plenty of wells and found nothing more than dirt. But where there was a spring underground, digging a well discovered the ever flowing water supply.
Spiritually speaking, where do I dig wells hoping my needs will be met? Money? Recognition? Relationships? Possessions? I can dig over and over, deeper and deeper and find only a bigger, deeper hole. The spring is there, underground, waiting to be found, but I must search for it. Where do I dig?
In John chapter 4 Jesus had a conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well. He told her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” How rewarding it is to search and find a flowing spring that never runs dry!
